3 Great Tips for Brighter Skin

Everyone's skin gets what I like to call "The Blahs" sometimes. You know, those times when it just doesn't look as good as it could. Lots of times, this can be caused by diet, changes in the weather, hormones and even the products we use. But the good thing is, all hope isn't lost. Here's the advice you see everywhere:

  1. Drink tons of water- The body is made of water. You really can't live without it
  2. Eat fruits and veggies- Again, these foods are made of water and contain essential vitamins and nutrients
  3. Don't smoke- Smoking causes the skin to age faster and all that puckering causes fine lines around the mouth.
  4. Use sunscreen all year long- SPF 30, broad spectrum only, please.  Just because you can't see the sun sometimes doesn't mean UV rays don't exist.  Reapply every 2-3 hours that your're outside. Who wants brown spots and leathery skin?
We know this. Anyone who's ever seen a magazine anywhere knows these things are pretty important to not only the health of our skin, but also our overall physical being. I don't think it's necessary to beat a dead horse by going over the super basics. But how about things we hear a little less often?
  1. Get some sleep. When I don't get enough sleep, I have a bad attitude. Even worse is my bad attitude about the bags under my eyes. Not cool. On top of saggy, baggy eyes, sleep deprivation ages your skin. Sleep time is when the skin gets a chance to renew itself and missing out on that vital time causes the body stress. Cortisol is a hormone released by the body in response to stress, which in excess amounts will break down the elasticity of skin.
  2. Keep your skincare routine simple. We really don't need a massive arsenal of products to take care of our skin. All you need is a cleanser, exfoliate, toner and moisturizer.  I already talked about why exfoliating is important in another post. Your moisturizer and serums are much more effective after removing all the dead skin.

Toners are good to hydrate dry skin and tame those of us who look like an oil slick by the end of the day. They also remove dirt and residue left over after cleansing. All natural witch hazel like Dickenson's is a good choice for all skin types.

  3. Massage your face. No, seriously. Increasing the circulation of blood to the skin instantly makes you look healthier. It also works your moisturizer into the skin making them work harder and more effectively. I've been following a video on YouTube about facial massage. I admit that I don't go through the entire routine every time, I go through most of the moves once until my moisturizer is absorbed. It feels really good and relaxing
