Makeup 101: Makeup Bag Essentials for Beginners

It's time for another Makeup 101 lesson and I really think you will appreciate this one. Let's talk makeup bags.  Lots of women carry a makeup bag in their purse. I'm sure you have one. I used to have an issue with carrying one: every time I opened it, I always felt like it was full of stuff that I never actually used to touch up or change my look. I feel like some women pack a makeup bag in fear of forgetting something so they pack everything.

The result?

Now your purse weighs five pounds more than it should. You don't need that weight of the world on your shoulders.

Let's be honest, you don't need to bring your whole collection with you. In reality, you just need to create a bag that you could utilize in different ways assuming that it was all you have. So I did some thinking and came up with a list of products that every woman needs in her makeup bag whenever she's on the go.

1. Foundation and Moisturizer
I put these together on the list because of the way I pack them. I hate carrying whole bottles of product in my purse. The last thing I want to do is drop my makeup bag and have a bottle of foundation shatter, So, I started packing a mini kit in a clean contact case. One side dedicated to each product. It's easy to refill and saves a ton of space. Essentially you could switch out moisturizer for primer if you have oily skin.

2. Mascara
I have spoken at length about my mascara addiction, so I'm the worst person to ask what my favorite mascara is. It changes every single day. However, you pick your favorite (bonus points if it is available in a travel sized tube.) and learn how to apply it to get the best length and volume from it here.

3. Eyeliner
Black, brown or whatever color you rock on a daily basis, I think you need this around. I prefer the automatic kind that doesn't need a sharpener.

4. Powder
A powder that matches your skin to set your liquid foundation. Could be loose or compact. It will be necessary to set any areas where you tend to get a bit shiny throughout the day

5. Eyeshadow quad
Neutral colors like gold and brown go with absolutely any outfit when you have to do your makeup in the car. So find a small quad  with champagne, gold and brown shades and keep it in your bag

6. Brow pencil
If nothing else, groomed brows help you immediately look more put together. Find a brow pencil, I prefer one shade lighter or darker than your hair color.

7. Wedge Sponges
These little triangular sponges can be used for a whole host of things. You can use them to apply or blend out liquid foundation, adding a touch of loose powder on the face to set oily spots, or protecting your skin while applying mascara to your lower lashes, I've even used the pointy edge to clean up lipstick edges on my lips. I always keep one or two with me.

8. Cotton Swabs
Another multipurpose product to keep on hand. You can use cotton swabs to clean up smudges, apply eyeshadow, gloss or touch up perfume. One of my favorite uses is swiping it to clean up messy eyeliner to get the perfect wing. Keep a couple in a snack-sized sandwich bag.

9. Lip Balm
Lipstick does not sit well on dry, chapped lips. Make sure you keep something on hand to moisturize them.

10. Neutral lip liner
Makeup bag space is at a premium. Choose a neutral lip liner that will work with either of the lipsticks you choose to add.

11. 2 Lipstick Shades
Lipstick can totally change the intensity of a look. That's why I like to have two in my bag. One that is more subtle/work-appropriate for daytime and one that is more bold for night time.  My current favorites are a pretty my-lips-but-better pink like Make Up For Ever Copper Pink and a vibrant red-orange such as MAC Lady Danger.

12. Double ended eyeshadow brush
Again, something that could have several uses. One with a flat side and a fluffy side will work just fine. This could be used for eye shadow or applying concealer. The flat side is great for packing/patting shadow on the lid so that you get more pigment. The fluffy side is perfect for blending out any harsh lines. You could also use the fluffy side to apply a light wash of color over the lid for a quick look on the go.
